Copyright 2006 Mark Dionne www.markdionne.com Enlistment papers in August 1862, signed by him with an X, say he was age 30, born in Hoosick, NY. In 1850, Frederick C. French, age 19, living with father and mother in Bennington. As of the 1860 census, reel 848 or 849 page 782: Name Frederick French. They lived in Hoosick, NY, Rensselaer county. Their personal property was worth a total of $20. In 1870, not listed with wife Hannah who is living in Bennington with her mother and children. Listed in 1870 in Duanesburgh, NY (Schenectady County) about 20 miles SE of Amsterdam, roll 1090 p. 250, as: Fredric age 30 (all born NY) Hannah 22 Agness 3 Abram 9/12 In 1880 Hanna is still with mother, Gordon and Jennie in Bennington, and marked as divorced. Meanwhile, in the 1880 census Frederick is living in Florida, Montgomery Co, NY with his new family. (Not the Florida in Orange County.) Frederick cannot read or write. Father is listed as born NY. In the next house is David French, age 67 with daughter and her husband and son. There is a David French age 48 in 1860 Florida census. Amsterdam Democrat newspaper articles about his death do not mention his war service. In 1890 veteran's census, Hannah French listed as widow in East Bennington, VT. Husband served July 1861 to July 4, 1864 in Co. E 10th VT Inf. "Prisoner in Libby & Andersonville for several months." 123-105 SD 1 ED 26 P6 #19 (Libby Prison was primarily for officers, and Fred probably did not stay there. But from the History of the Vermont Tenth Regiment, p. 153, we learn that the soldiers of the regiment explored the abandoned prison around May 16-24, 1865 so Fred may have spun a few believable yarns about it. Also, there was a lieutenant H. French, 3d Vt. Vols., Hartford, VT in Libby.) In 1890 veteran's census, Hannah E. widow of French, Frederick listed in 5th Ward, Amsterdam, NY. Private E Co. 10th VT Inf. 8 Aug 1862 to 22 Jun 1865. "Finger shot off, prisoner in Andersonville 5 months." 123-51 Dist 6 ED 65 #19 See for prison info. E, 10th Vermont Volunteer Infantry 1 Sep 1862; taken prisoner 24 Jun 1864; paroled 24 Nov 1864; discharged 22 Jun 1865; is listed on the rolls of Andersonville Prison, in Georgia. The 10th Infantry wasn't engaged on 24 Jun 1864, so the date may be a typo; they were at the battle of Weldon Railroad, VA, the day before. (First battle of Weldon RR, aka Jerusalem Plank Road. Brother-in-law Edward Kelly served in same unit, same dates. Only 5 men enlisted on that date. Also, according to Tom Ledoux: The Enrollment Act was enacted by Congress in March 1863, and was the first draft or conscription. Enlisting in August 1862, Frederick French would have been a volunteer. His code number at Andersonville was 44940. (Listed as Frederick C. French) From Andersonville, the Final Depot (p. 220-225) By November, 1864 the prison was being emptied for fear of Union attack, and the last 841 prisoners inside the stockade were marched out on Nov 11. Left were the patients in the hospital and barely 200 parolees, including clerks, carpenters, nurses and blacks. Total population on December 1 was 1359 (sick and paroled). From the History of the Tenth Vermont, we learn that on Dec 4, 1864 just after Frederick was released, the regiment arrived again at Weldon Railroad where they had fought 6 months before and Frederick had been captured. (p. 137) . The troops were later mustered out on June 22, 1865 in Washington. (Some transferred to the 5th Vermont.) On the 23d they departed and arrived in New York on the evening of the 24th. They arrived in Burlington (by boat) at 2AM on the 27th, greeted by many citizens and comrades who had been discharged earlier. The men were furloughed until July third, when they returned and were paid and discharged. (p. 156) 35% of the men who entered Andersonville died there. At the height of operation, there was 20 square feet of area per prisoner. Pension papers indicate he "drowned in the canal" in Florida, Montgomery Co, NY. This is the Erie Canal. (See newspaper articles.) Coroner report says his body was found 1/2 mile below Phillips Lock, 1.5 miles East of Port Jackson, at the "Old Dr. Carroll place" formerly known as (something like) Jan E. Linda place. This would seem to be right near the main bridge to Amsterdam. Newspaper article about his death says he was buried in Green Hill Cemetery. List of graves, found on the Montgomery County web page, does not have his name. But see NY Gene. & Bio. Record, 1937, p. 185. "Tombstone Inscriptions, Montgomery County, N.Y", which reads: French, Frederick, [C.] [Co. E.10th Vt.] (drowned), [1835/1881]. d. 9/1/81, unknown. There is a comment in the article: "The sexton's list. Names and dates in brackets are taken from the tombstones." But this comment is hard to understand when you look at the entire list. I think "unknown" refers to the age at death. Recent listings, including FindAGrave.com, do not include his name. Note that the 1840 census of Amsterdam, Montgomery Co, NY has a Frederick French on page 296. Also 1850, Utica, Oneida Co, p. 430. 1855 NY State census for Amsterdam has two Frederic French: Son of Samuel and Sarah age 17 Son of Samuel and Hannah age 7 The April 18, 1832 date comes from Ted Roby, who says: I have checked my records re: Frederick French. This [the 18 Apr 1832 date] information comes from my aunt Dorothy's records and notes. She may have gotten some info from her mother Mary Emily French Mugford or her grandfather Edmund French who was one of Frederick's older brothers. In fact aunt Dorothy has penned a side note stating this info came from a notation written by Edmund, January 10, 1873. He was living in Pittsfield, MA at that time. I think much of the information aunt Dorothy had came from Pittsfield. Some from her aunt Nella French Gardiner. This is all I have at this time, hope it helps.
