He also asked that he be reimbursed for a musket, having brought one when he joined the army and never getting it back. According to his wife, in her pension application: "My husband has often told me that he first went with the service at Ticonderoga under Capt. Joseph Lyman in 1776 & served five months & at request of the commanding officer he staid two months longer." No official records could be found. There are official records that he served from Sept 14, 1777 to Sept 14, 1780 as a Private in (Capt. William R.) Lee's Regiment of the Continental Troops. Commanding officers that Sarah recalls are "under Capt. Hastings in Col. Henry Jackson's Regiment", Capt. J. Pool, Capt Turner, and Capt Suka Bonney of Chesterfield. Also Capt. J. Wood, Capt. J. Sile, Colonel Crane and Capt. Lincoln. He left the service around the time of Cornwallis' surrender but not at that engagement. See list below. In 1844, Sarah had lived 35 years in Northampton, and 30 years in Williamsburg before that. In the 1810 census they were living in Northampton. There are also comments indicating he came from Braintree and was at times confused with Asa French from Weymouth, his cousin. (There were 5 Asa Frenchs in the war.) Sarah was granted a pension of $80 per year on March 4, 1843. ---------------------------------- John Quincy Adams was Asa French's third cousin. Sarah White was Asa French's 3d cousin once removed (Thomas White b. 1599 was their common ancestor) Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution Volume 6 page 63: FRENCH, ASA, Williamsburgh. Henry Jackson, agreeable to the arrangement of April 9, 1779. Hampshire Gazette, Feb 22, 1842, has a brief death notice, giving date of Feb 18. Hampshire records book 28 p. 282 and book 29 p. 37 (index incorrectly says p. 34): 10 April 1809, Daniel Butler of Northampton sold to Asa and Samuel French [Samuel Sr. died 1804] both of Williamsburg, yeoman, 50 acres in Northampton off of the South side of the lot which Jesse Wild bought of Elijah Allen which the said Jesse by his will gave to Thomas Wild which the said Thomas Wild conveyed to the said Daniel April 1, 1806. [Looks like price was $333 but there is other complex language about payments.] According to Ralmon Black, Asa lived in a house on Village Hill in Williamsburg, dated 1775, build by his father Samuel. Probably the above property was occupied by his son, Samuel. Note the info above that indicates that Asa and his wife moved to Northampton around 1809. |
